Jack o' Lantern Noisemakers

Dublin Core

Title

Jack o' Lantern Noisemakers

Description

Trick or treat! Noisemakers like these were used in the past to ward off evil spirits. They also may have added to the atmosphere of local Halloween celebrations.

Jack o’ lanterns like the ones depicted here derive from the old tradition of “souling,” when turnips were carved into lanterns during the Pagan festivity of Samhain. Why do you think turnips were replaced with pumpkins when Irish and Scottish immigrants arrived in North America?
